Canon PowerShot SD870 IS
With easy-to-use controls and a wide shooting angle, the SD870 produces exceptional images.
Big, 3-inch LCD. Wide-angle lens. Touch wheel control.
No optical viewfinder. High ISO settings result in noisy images.
Plenty of point-and-shoot cameras promise to pack terrific image quality into a compact and easy-to-use device. The 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD870—an update of the SD850 and SD800 in the Digital Elph series—delivers spectacularly on both claims and adds solid image stabilization as well. The camera offers a 3-inch LCD, face detection, and a 28mm-to-105mm, f/2.8-to-f/5.8, 3.8X optical zoom lens. The only reason it does not supplant our current Editors’ Choice winner, the Canon PowerShot SD1000, is its lack of an optical viewfinder. Other than that, with a competitive price of about $300, the SD870 will appeal to the point-and-shoot crowd, and its beautiful image quality will satisfy the most discriminating photographers.
